“If only I knew how to deal with depression!” - This phrase undoubtedly spins around the minds of millions today as they struggle with a clinical illness known as major depression. A modern-day study of depressed persons found that some tried to cope with their depression by ‘taking anger out on other people, reducing tension by drinking more, eating more, and taking more tranquilizing drugs.’ Unfortunately, this only resulted in more depression, confusion, and anxiety.

A number of depressed persons refuse medical help because of their fear of being viewed as mentally weak or abnormal. Yet, major depression is by no means a sign of mental weakness. Research shows that this clinical disorder may exist when there is a certain chemical malfunction, or imbalance, in the brain. Therefore, often the disorder can be improved by adjusting the thinking pattern of the patient along with some help from appropriate medication or nutrients. Winning the battle against depression does not mean that you will never feel depressed again. Sadness is a part of life. Yet, there are ways of dealing with major depression so that it does not cripple a person from carrying out daily activities.

A doctor will often prescribe medication in the form of antidepressants. These are a form of medicine designed to correct the chemical imbalance. Along with this, sufferers do well to try to maintain a positive outlook of their condition and commit themselves to a program regular exercise. Sufferers also need to be aware that certain foods can trigger depression. Chocolate, wine, and even soda can trigger depression. Of course, all persons are unique, and what works for one person man not work for another.

The use of antidepressants is not always successful. A number of troublesome side effects can result which don’t leave the sufferer any better off. And even if the chemical malfunction is corrected, unless one’s thinking is corrected, the depression may return. Therefore, it is up to each individual to find out which method of treatment works for them. Regardless of what program of treatment is decided upon or prescribed, it is vital that sufferers stick with the program. Overconfidence and cutting back on medication will only cause depression to return.

In conclusion then, if you are wanting to know how to deal with depression, please accept that you have a problem, get treatment, and stick with it. By doing so, you will live a normal life and make things easier on your family.
